Description

Rosa Montero, a renowned Spanish writer and journalist, wrote a trilogy that focus on the complex characterization of her characters. The first two novels, Tears in Rain and Weight of the Heart present important social issues in today's world through her main character, Bruna Husky, and her development in a futuristic world. Bruna is a techno-human that, like all other techno-humans, has a limited lifespan. When the novels start, she only has 10 years left to live. Society in this world is prejudice and discriminates in many ways against those who are not human or do not have power. Bruna faces personal issues, such as finding love and facing her early mortality, at the same time that she confronts a hostile social environment. On the other hand, global warming has dramatically changed the way people live in the future. Although the novel is set in the future, Rosa Montero uses Bruna and other characters to project today's societal problems and the imminent climate changes. My paper will analyze this portrayal of the present in a future fictional world and what kind of answers are given to today's issues and how Rosa Montero uses her writing as an outlet for creating awareness.
