Proportional: Poems

Date

Description

I will be presenting a collection of poems that I have put together as part of a manuscript for my Creative Writing thesis. My poems are free verse, taking on many forms, but often are composed as prose poems. I write poetry that concerns what occurs outside of conventional systems and focuses on how poetry as a medium is uniquely able to reveal those experiences. I am greatly interested in liminal subjects, the way the mind works, the ambiguous and vague subjective experience, between-ness, and how poetry is used to understand one's individual existence. The poetry I write is usually open form and I try to capture the way my mind thinks about the world in ways that challenge conventional notions of time or other ideas of how people normally see the world. My poetics attempts to describe what the world is beyond the normal, often through focused observation on subjects or thoughts, or attempting to see habits or typical occurrences as magical or carrying more mysterious weight about them. Poetry for me has a special capacity to reach the essence of an idea, and can thus reveal what is behind and underneath what is held at face value. Nothing is allowed to be just what it is in my poetic world.
