Description

The short story is often misunderstood, with some even going so far as to state short stories are for those who don't have the talent or drive to complete longer works. However, I find the opposite is true. A good author can draw from their experiences to make even the shortest work feel like it is the only thing that a reader should be reading. Novelist and short-story writer Susan Minot was a strong influence on my cycle, called "The End of the Beginning". Like her, I chose to create a set of characters and move in sequential order to tell their stories. Unlike her, it's not a huge set of characters to memorize, nor is it set in the axis normal life as we understand it. My short story cycle truly focuses on only one character, and even with the supporting cast, there are still few that would need to be remembered on their own. My cycle is set within the world of martial arts tournaments, which is something that I have experience with. My cycle remains within the genre because of the short length and the openness to interpretation. I hope that in listening to me read aloud the following excerpts from my short story cycle, it allows you to get a better feel for the world that I want to share with you. This presentation will include both a brief scholarly discussion of the genre and a reading from my story "The End of the Beginning".
