Description

Linguistic imperialism is a phenomenon that occurs when one language is imposed onto speakers of other dialects. A real-world example was the spread of the English language throughout the modern world. The goal of English linguistic imperialism was to make natives speak, look, and act as if they were European. Although the age of colonialism has passed, the dominance of the English language persists through economic globalization. Particularly, the English language remains prominent in the South Asian country of Bangladesh. Bangladesh's government schools place heavy emphasis on learning the English language from the primary level to tertiary. This study correlates Bangladesh's history with English linguistic imperialism to the present perspectives of professors and students in higher education. Using in-depth interviews and literature analysis, the researchers form an overarching narrative describing the English language's role and influence in the lives of contemporary professors and students at Jahangirnagar University in Savar, Bangladesh
