Indian filmmakers are struggling with the ever changing governmental beliefs on censorship throughout the different eras of political rule over the past 20 years. The government has strict rules on what film can and cannot show, yet the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) often ignores rules of violence and instead focuses their energy on restricting scenes considered anti-Indian or too sexual. While literature on the issue focuses on censorship under the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), researchers do not compare the censorship the BJP enforces to the censorship other ruling parties enforce. The research will take three movies from three different periods of government rule to examine the strictness of censors based on party ideology. Using CBFC rules will provide the basis to quantitatively and qualitatively measure the censorship of Indian film by using the complete list of censorship rules to analyze the movies. Indian censorship has tightened over the past 20 years to support depicting nationalist tendencies. Across the world, art has the ability to affect views on controversial topics, therefore film censorship greatly the capacity of a culture to broaden minds and have important conversations on contentious subjects.
